Sa libreng pre-school, may laban ang anak mo!
- Tessie Aquino-Oreta
If Chiz Escudero is bent on eliminating Algebra and Chemistry from the standard high school curriculum of public secondary institutions, disgraced former senator Tessie Aquino-Oreta has put forward one advocacy with her campaign ads – free preschools. Forgive me for being obnoxious, but my preschool life lasted all of two weeks and yet I didn’t exactly struggle through elementary. In a setup where funds for primary, secondary and tertiary education are already scarce, do we really need to build centers for kids to sleep and drink milk in?
I still believe that most children learn to read and count at home from their parents and preschool exists so that the parents of these children could show off how smart their kids are. The thing that bothers me about that ad is that it tries to the greedy side of mothers by going with the line may laban ang anak mo. It’s like she’s already planting the competitiveness on a four year-old’s mind. How can you win by espousing one-upsmanship on children? Jeez.

Agreed. I suffered 3 long years of schooling before elementary. How unlucky. I don't even know if it did me good. I like to think I'm naturally a genius. LOL. Kidding.
If Oreta wants to provide free education, it'd be better if she concentrates more on primary educ. Free preschool nga, di ka naman makatungtong ng grade school. You're right, the things being taught in preschool are just the basics that everyone can learn from home.
i beg to disagree. i think her new campaign is very self-redeeming. it's focused, feasible and beneficial.
if by pre-school you mean "centers for kids to sleep and drink milk in," of course it's unnecessary; but that is not what a pre-school's supposed to be. true, though, many pseudo-pre-schools are like that.
to my mind, if oreta wins and proactively lobbies for this cause's legislation, it will define pre-school (which should be a genuine child-learning center with a good mandated curriculum and supported by continuous research) and how the project will be funded (which should be entrepreneurial a la pasig ferry).
given its right conception, pre-schooling is very important, because it's a phase that could very well help the build-up of a kid's intelligence (as in, one or more of the eight multiple intelligences) when s/he goes off to grade school. pre-schooling is also helpful in developing a psycho-social character.
i also think her campaign tagline is ok. if anything at all, it's reflective of her whole "(self)redemption" campaign theme.
"The dancing queen has barely changed at all"
–>on contrary, i think she even did a 360 degrees
erratum: psycho-social character in my comment should have been further qualified as "healthy" since everyone has it, but not everybody's psycho-social character is healthy
Thanks James.
360 degrees would mean she didn't change at all. :p
Is Tessie Aquino Oreta's plan as detailed and as well-researched as yours? How can we expect for something that grand to be present in all the communities that needs it when we can't even have enough primary education facilities? In a time when we need to tighten our belts, I think we could sacrifice this "luxury" for the time being.
And oh, minus brownie points for you for indirectly implying that my psycho-social is "unhealthy". wahaha. :p
Hi Benj,
In fairness to the dancing 'pokpok' of EDSA Dos, she indeed is focused on education issues when she served her term in the Senate.
Although her brand of education reform is different with mine, I think she knows what she is talking about.
Besides, pre-school education is part of Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's BEAT THE ODDS , so expect something more or less good out of it if taken on a piece-meal approach rather than reading their entire education reform framework.
Since time immemorial, our brand of education desires to be competitive, so it's nothing new but we need to strike a balance on how do we really define 'competitiveness' as a matter of public investment vis-a-vis benefits to the community.
It's like saying UP students are getting public investment from the State but it's not beneficial for the State if its student will just work their ass at call center due to higher wages or worst they flew out of the country.
Oh well, apologies, my thoughts are scattered this early morn. But generally, the political ads of TAO is better than seeing Mike Defensor's ad. It's like looking at the most pathetic pol ads possible in the boobtube.
Argh…
Village Tickler
the heck!?
does pre-school counts in the years of studying? i may have learn something and the necessary preparation in elementary, but i barely recall all my pre-school experiences.
i guess, i have to put that in my resumé if pre-school is really that important.
I advise Oreta to just open a dancing school for streetchildren and she can even invite Recto para mapagaralan ang sayaw ng pulitika haha
The main reason why I am still taking a glance with that TVC is JM Reyes.. yung batang gusgusin dun :p
Dangnammit, they're all the same! Thinking up useless b*llsh** that don't address the country's problems at all!
I agree with Shari, basic education merits more priority. If anything should be done at the pre-school level, they should look at the systems in Singapore and Japan. They have kids at those ages making circuit boards, learning a second (or third or more) language and playing at least one musical instrument. By the time they are in what we call the primary level, they're attending school in about the same amount of hours that their parents work. These points do seem ridiculously extreme, but how come their cultures are able to manage, and we can't? Are we just not capable enough?
I suppose, only those rich pupils who should go to pre-school. Real schooling starts at grade school. So you are right when you said I still believe that most children learn to read and count at home from their parents and preschool exists so that the parents of these children could show off how smart their kids are. I know some of my younger cousins who already know how to count and sing ABC before they went to pre-school.
"360 degrees would mean she didn’t change at all"
–>onga naman. i should have said 180
i'm not sure if Oreta's plan is already as detailed as i figure it to be, but i'm pretty sure she'd polish it when elected. i get your concerns and all, but pre-schooling is no "luxury," it's a need.
we aren't lacking in resources. in fact, we have lots of it, but our government hasn't yet (or doesn't know how?) used it well – as in reasonable priorities, efficient budgeting, disbursements and auditing. we can make it happen, given political will.
i'm not a fan of Oreta, but i'm a fan of her campaign now. it's a very good one, content and delivery-wise.
