High-profile eye surgeon and Lasik specialist Glenn Kawesch, MD was recently found dead in his hotel room at Cancun, Mexico. If you knew Dr. Kawesch, his now bereaved family would appreciate your words of comfort and condolences during their time of grief.

A Letter to a Fallen Pioneer
I'm NOT here to talk about the Eye Surgeon to the Stars. Not here to talk about the Refractive Surgeon who has the world paten "Flap Dryer", nor I'm I here to speak about the man who has performed over 40 000 Refractive Eye Surgeries. I'm here to speak about the man that I worked along side of, the man that I respected, admired and faithfully served for the last eight months. In this life, in this man eat man world, we are NOT judged by each time we fall, but by how we handle it and how we rise each time we fall. He made it look so easy to rise higher and higher each time he tripped.
His untimely death was devastating and unexpected. I mourned him and I hope that I will wake up from this nightmare and have him standing over my shoulders asking for ANYTHING.
If I'm to speak of the Glenn Kawesch that I knew, rather than having us mourned his passing, he would rather have us celebrate his legacy.
We received countless calls, emails, etc of patients, celebrities, athletes, politicians and fellow doctors in the area (whom worked along side Dr Glenn Kawesch) expressing their grief and condolences. And to those, I humbly say thank you. We also received half a handful of calls from other competitors in the area (whom they never had the privilege to work along side him). Although they are entitled to their opinion, I must remind them that while Dr Kawesch had the industry at the palm of his graceful hands, these competitors were not only in dippers, but some were still a science experiment that went bad.
Dr Kawesch had many passions. Austin, his son, was his pride and joy. His radiant trophy above all others. Just after the procedure has been completed, Dr Kawesch would run around the LASER and anxiously ask "can you see?, take a look, can you see?" and I would give him a slight elbow and whisper, " Doc, they just had LASER and their eyes are watery"…. Pts were actually filled with tears of joy "oh my God I can see"…..Who was I to question this pioneer? Some pts would say, "that's it?" I would jokingly respond, " Unless you want more!" And how I took all that for granted.
One Pt asked me (rubbing his thumb with his middle and point finger (the universal money sign)" …come on Bobby, you know, what does Dr Kawesch make?" I'm glad he asked because we have an unwritten policy in the office that if you ask, we will tell. "What does Dr Kawesch make?" I replied. " Dr Kawesch makes BLIND people see. Dr Kawesch had the most updated LASERs in the Industry. Kawesch LASER Centers had FIVE LASERS in the San Diego office. This broad diversity of LASERs offered the best option for the patient's unique and individual needs. After all not all eyes are the same. Dr Kawesch would spin the dial over and over, Do you like one or two, one or two?" pt would reply "crystal clear, crystal clear"……..OVER and OVER again until that patient, at least for the moment, knows no other two words. "That is what Dr Kawesch makes, now what do you make?"
May his anxious soul FINALY rest in peace.
My DEEPEST condolences to the Kawesch Family. Rest assured, that we stand by you, we support you and share your grief.
We are blessed with an outstanding team. (Not in any chronological order) From Office Manager, Admistrator, Counselors, Techs, Call Center, Receptionist to outside events coordinators. The team whom he selectively picked to rid the world of the hassles of glasses and contact lenses.
Special thanks to John, Michelle and Rob for holding the office together when the news broke. I compared them to how Rudi Guiliani held New York together during the Sep 11th tragedy. Thanks to all the patients that understood, under the circumstances, chose to continue with their procedure with Dr Gary Kawesch, whom he gallantly and without hesitation stepped up to carry on his brother's legacy. To those patients, I say thank you. Thanks for having the confidence in moving forward, even though they were offered a 100% refund. Some underwent the hassle of waiting few extra hours until we got on the same page. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK you for having faith in us and your unconditional loyalty is greatly appreciated.

I only knew Dr. Glenn Kawesch professionally. He is the man who realized my lifelong dream of living without corrective lenses. I was deeply saddened by news of his passing. My sympathy and prayers are with his family, friends and coworkers.
