DANCES WITH TREES: Professor Grace Odal-Devora of the University of the Philippines celebrates World Environment Day at the Angud installation in front of the CCP grounds. The celebration coincides with the launch of the “Tree for Life: 20M Seedlings for Planting,” a project that aims to surpass last year’s Green Philippine Highway’s planting of 800,000 trees. She’s in the front page of the Inquirer website! What exactly is she doing? She is performing the sayaw ng diwa (dance of essence[?]) para tawagin ang mga elemento (to call on the elements)! Yes. She actually made the entire class do this during our stint with her in Hum102! If you’ve seen me perform in my gigs, you’d know that I have no problem channeling music into movement even if I don’t dance that well myself. I chose Mudvayne’s Not Falling for my sayaw ng diwa and I tried my best to dislocate my cervical vertebrae by headbanging and contorting my body into different uncomfortable positions throughout the more-than-five-minute-long track. And yes, I had my eyes closed and I nearly kicked her while I was moving around.
And oh, she made us do this at the UP Sunken Garden!
Kamusta naman!? Shoutouts to Coy, Gibbs and Seph.

lastikman, kaw ba yan? LOL. naku, no wonder you turned out to be the way you are–brainy but unpredictable and cranky, hahaha. something must have gotten unhinged up there, man, JOKE!
shoutout to you too! and thanks for the inclusion in your top-10 list. now i know what you mean. my masthead looks horrible against the rest!
And I needed to capture and cut it! If you save the image, the font won't be included. Hehe.
Your professor seems to be a total hippie. I wonder what kind of illegal seedlings she planted, heh.
my humanities professor does nothing but play the piano in our entire class hour. he's so fond of recognition and he a sucker for limelight.
your post reminds me of my grade six music teacher whom i have recently seen in a HS classmate's wedding. there he (the teacher) was, playing the violin all along the wedding ceremonies and reception. i approached him and introduced myself then got his contact number. might be useful some time
i don't know how you reacted after seeing a long-time prof in your early school years. but i guess this prof of yours wasn't really missed yet unlike my grade six prof.
I can die after seeing you do this again. After this, I have now seen everything. HAHAHAHAHA!
You should've posted a picture of you dancing instead. LOL. The Benj performing some freaky ritual dance at UP Sunken Garden! That's something you don't see everyday.
Shoutout to you na rin and good luck sa enrollment.
oh!!! she's a up professor din pala, i thought she was a real modern babaylan… i've seen her perform last year when we were asked by our Kas1 prof to attend a tree planting ceremony in front of FC in honor of a great female historian (i'm trying to remember as much as i can about that historian but my brain cells are malfunctioning/might be resting right now…)… and she was fabulous!!!
although it was somehow awkward to see a sane person doing those moves, she did it so well that no one even dared to laugh… probably because we all knew that she was doing a serious ritual and that she should be respected…
Kamusta naman!?
Wala bang nakakuha sa 'yo in video when you're doing the dance? I will pay for it ilabas nyo lang. Hehe.
Kailan 'tong monumental event na 'tong pagsasayaw niyo sa Sunken Garden? Last year lang?
And I agree with JoyfulChicken. She does look like Hippie Sisa to me.
OFF-TOPIC:
Is it KAMUSTA or KUMUSTA? Nagtatalo kami dito sa bahay e. Answer without googling. Hehe.
When I first saw that photo via inquirer.net, I thought it was a painting. Funny, funny, kakaiba talaga mga profs sa UP. Haha.
benj, i would be interested if a video is posted. i just wonder how it was for you and the rest of the guys calling on all the elements!
Sounds like your professor is somewhat cool and yes I agree on what joyfulchicken said about being a hippie as well.
This post reminded me of all the interpretative dances and other dance presentations I did in highschool and college. I shudder at the thought.
Yup, sana may video. I can't imagine you, Benj, dancing. Hehe.
Anyone who took PI100 under Nilo Ocampo? Another eccentric UP teacher *thumbs up*
so that place was in front of the ccp. i once saw it and i got question marks all over my head. i don't actually get it – the ropes or lines or whatever.
:p at least na-dyaryo yung prof mo diba. hehehe.
Jesus. LOLOLOLOLOL.
Weren't we moshing in the same concert six years ago? hehe. You get the picture.
whoever took this photo – hanga ako. hehe
feel na feel mo yung sayaw benj
Ma'am Grace sure is a great woman! I haven't talked to her before but what she does for Mother Nature is very noble. I don't know what neobabaylans do, but as a follower of a nature-based spirituality, I do exalt her for her efforts.
Sanity? Insanity? what's the difference? who says who? hehehehe
