The Case of the 22 Year Old Male With Flu-Like Symptoms
General Data
BE is a 22 year-old, right-handed, atheist, single male, currently living in Manila but originally from Batangas who has refused formal medical treatment for his condition. He was never admitted to PGH.
Chief Complaint
cough, colds and nausea
History of Present Illness
10 days ago - The patient experienced sore throat. No consult was made and no medications were taken.
9 days ago - The patient developed cough and colds accompanied with low grade fever (37.7 C). The patient also reported nausea. Paracetamol (q6) was taken to alleviate symptoms. Slight relief was noted. No consult was done.
7 days ago - The patient progressed to having cough productive of green sputum (yay!). Nightly exacerbations was noted. Tachypnea was noted by one of his companions. No consult was done.
6 days ago - Despite experiencing nausea, the patient played basketball for his class. No consult was done.
5 days ago - Rales (gurgling sounds on auscultation - using the stethoscope to listen to the lungs — findings indicative of possible pneumonia) were noted by the patient’s companion. The patient talked to a recent and/but brilliant medical school graduate (i.e. strictly not YET a doctor - but already better than some…) who prescribed the use of Azithromycin 500mg BID for 3 days. This “consult” was done via Yahoo Messenger.
3 days ago - The patient experienced dramatic improvements. Cough is no longer productive. Rales were noted to have disappeared according to a pulmonologist at Asian Hospital. The doctor prescribed Doxofylline and Methylprednisolone. The YM doctor found this incredulous.
Today - Heck, why the hell am I still stuck with this dry cough?!
I was also taking to JP somewhere in this timeline, but I really can’t recall when those exact dates were. Haha

Hey, Benj, let me know when you’re irritated enough to allow me to pray for you. Hahahaha.
I thought BE is a med student. Why isn’t he consulting his own mentors?
BE is a proud bastard.
I am praying for BE’s fast recovery so he can blog more often. :p
ahahaha i ♥ ze YM doctor. HAHA for all his useless and useful med advice (and those that take me by surprise, when they are offered unsolicited :p)
Single male? Since when? LOL. Are med students allowed to get sick? Don’t they get a deduction or something. Haha!
Kidding.
Dude, this is medicine, not Friendster. Hehe. :p You’re either single, married, separated, divorced or widowed. Walang in a relationship! hehe
LOL this really made me laugh. It’s like seeing charts all over again.. this time, without the crazy doctor handwriting at PGH. Thank God we’re now computerized! *cue shocked look* Anyway, get well soon!
Try a different med. Maybe you medicine doesn’t work that well with your body.
recidivist sickness… kelangan nang mag-diagnostics!
Bwahahaaha I didn’t see that twist coming! hehehe that’s funny, but I hope your future patients will not get to read this LoL! =)
Haha! YM sure is handy. Can I get the doctor’s ID? LOL.
Hope you have fully recovered.
And dude, you were taking what to JP? Must be a typo. Or I’m just slow.
di kaya AIDS na yan?
pahinga ka kasi. hehe
“… cough productive of green sputum…”
OK, that was a bit too detailed for me. I’m having bad mental visuals… and it’s making me want to throw up, LOL.
Lol. Sosyal. Via YM pa ginawa ang consultation! Lol!
today’s flu or flu-like illnesses are really getting more and more difficult and longer to cure because the strains develop to be more and more non-responsive to treatment (this is my understanding from some materials that i have encountered)
nevertheless, i hope you fully recover SOON!
Something like this happened to me about a year ago too. Took 500mg of Zihtromax (Azithromycin) as well, but only od.
After which, same as you, I was stuck with a dry cough. Doctor told me it was a residual effect of the irritation and gave me 3 doses of Medrol (Methylprednisolone) 2mg od for 5 days. Then it was gone.
Just my 2-cents hehe… Anyhow, you’ve been tagged.
Flu’s suck!
Better read on post-infectious/post-inflammatory cough. Could last for about 6 weeks, you know. Doxofylline and Methylprednisolone may actually help.
Hope you’re feeling better by this time.
