Square Off! Update: DLSU beats UB
With a split decision of 2-1, the duo of Ryan Sebolino and Dino de Leon from De Lasalle University beat the pair from University of Baguio to advance to the quarterfinals of the Square Off! Debate Championships. DLSU entered the tournament as the fourth seed compared to UB who is seeded thirteenth out the sixteen debate institutions who chose to participate in the competition. Dino de Leon, DLSU’s veteran debater for six years running, was chosen as the Texter’s Choice and the unanimous pick by the adjudicators as the Best Speaker for the round.
With the win, DLSU now is awaiting the winner of the round between University of the Philippines Baguio and Xavier University . Those two schools will be squaring off next week as the fifth and twelfth seeded teams, respectively. The debaters from Taft are now in the same league of four with the other schools who secured a quarterfinals slot in the past weeks - Ateneo de Manila University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the University of the Philippines Diliman.
The University of Baguio is now out of the running for getting the competition’s top prize of a cash reward equal to the price of the registration fee for the 2008 Assumption University Worlds in Bangkok, Thailand (roughly $1100). The University of Santo Tomas, Western Mindanao State University and Mindanao State University - Marawi City have likewise been eliminated in the first three rounds of debates.
The three adjudicators for the round were Michael Chua (the chair adjudicator) from UP Diliman, Glen Tuason from Ateneo Law School and Benj Espina from UP Manila. Benj Espina dissented and decided to give the round to the University of Baguio.

I was able to catch the last part nung si Randy ang nagsasalita. My lolo told me na ang ibang debaters daw ngayon sa sobrang paspas magsalita hindi na naiintindihan ng viewers ang point nya at malaki ang tendency na magtalsikan ang laway
Ey Benj, I’m sorry if this sounds off topic but I hope you could come at the Taste Asia later tonight! WEEEEEEEE heeh
Go go go UP Manila! Make Ateneo de Zamboanga uh.. eat their words?
Benj, pasok na daw La Salle sa finals ng Square-off. Can you confirm this? Thanks.
SEE! ADZU beats UP twice!
Now it’s two BLUE EAGLES trying to claw each other..
ADMU is a strong team but ADZU has traveled a long way to reach this far.. But only one thing is for sure.. an ATENEO UNIVERSITY will win the cup!!!
Hehe!!
Sharmila P. and Henry S. will surely be the speakers to be watched in the finals as they are both very good speakers.
I saw the Pornography debate last night and it was both intellectually challenging and outrageously funny at the same time. I’m not a regular viewer and last night was the first that I saw. Starting now, I know I’d be an avid watcher.
It’s ADMU vs ADZU next week. Which eagle will fly higher and which one will just simply be blue?
By the way, for those who are watching it regularly, I didn’t get the name of the youngest judge seated in the middle. He seems so young, yet very intelligent. Anyone who knows his name care to crack?
I’m taking the LAE this Sunday. Good luck to me and the other aspirers.
