The UP Intervarsities

Over the weekend, the best debaters and adjudicators from five units of the University of the Philippines took part in the 2nd University of the Philippines Intervarsities. Aside from fostering camaraderie among the debaters from different UP campuses, the competition was also meant to prepare the pugs of the State University for the rigorous road to the National Debate Championship and of course, the Worlds Universities Debate Championship - the most prestigious competition in the field of debate.
After the five preliminary rounds, the top sixteen teams were allowed to proceed to the break rounds phase. The break rounds are comparable to the Playoffs phase of sporting competitions. You basically need to win to advance to the next round. Once you lose, you’re out of the running.
The winner (best out of the four teams in the room) of each round gets three point, so the perfect score is 15. Nobody finished with that total. The highest breaking score was 13 - achieved by a team from Diliman. All seven of Diliman’s teams made it to the top 16. UP Manila’s teams wound up 3rd, 5th, 7th (my team), 9th and 17th (just outside the top 16). Baguio managed to pull through with two teams while the hosts Los Baños also got two of their own in.
A hybrid team comprising of a Baguio alumnus and a student from Diliman made the breaks as well.
After the quarterfinals, UP Manila claimed four of the eight quarterfinals slots at stake. Unfortunately, all but one of the teams was kept from competing in the finals. This made UPM pin their hopes on the shoulders of the contingent’s banner team - Alvina Antonio and Ruffa San Pedro.
In the end, Diliman F - the team of Tet Grajo and Biboy Beltran — were declared champions. My team competed with this team thrice and we always finished next to them.
