Benj: I have no plans of seeing The Golden Compass, but this forwarded e-mail made me crack up a bit!

Hi everyone,
There will be a new children’s movie out in December called “The
Golden Compass”. The movie has been described as “atheism for kids”
and is based on the first book of a trilogy entitled “His Dark
Materials” that was written by Phillip Pullman. Pullman is a militant
atheist and secular humanist who despises C. S. Lewis and the
“Chronicles of Narnia”. His motivation for writing this trilogy was
specifically to counteract Lewis’ symbolisms of Christ that are
portrayed in the Narnia series.
Clearly, Pullman’s main objective is to bash Christianity and promote
atheism. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said
in a 2003 interview that “my books are about killing God.” He has even
stated that he wants to “kill God in the minds of children”. It has
been said of Pullman that he is “the writer the atheists would be
praying for, if atheists prayed.”
While “The Golden Compass” movie itself may seem mild and innocent,
the books are a much different story. In the trilogy, a young
streetwise girl becomes enmeshed in an epic struggle to ultimately
defeat the oppressive forces of a senile God. Another character, an ex-
nun, describes Christiaity as “a very powerful and convincing
mistake.” In the final book, characters representing Adam and Eve
eventually kill God, who at times is called YAHWEH. Each book in the
trilogy gets progressively worse regarding Pullman’s hatred of Jesus
Christ.
“The Golden Compass” is set to premier on December 7, during the
Christmas season (and staring Nicole Kidman), and will probably be
heavily advertised.
Promoters hope that unsuspecting parents will take their children to
see the movie, that they will enjoy the movie, and that the children
will want the books for Christmas.
Please consider a boycott of the movie and the books. Also, pass this
information along to everyone you know (including church leaders).
This will help to educate parents, so that they will know the agenda
of the movie. I am sending this to those of you who have kids or
friends with kids, grandkids or have influence with kids. So many
things today are darkness concealed in what appears to be innocent.

i’m a fan of this series. but i think it’s better to read and watch it without presupposed knowledge about Pullman’s so-called ‘militant’ atheism, and thus, atheist orientation of the series. i think one would enjoy it more.
but it’s true. God dies at the end, lol. in book three.
I’ve read the trilogy. God did die in the last book, but he wasn’t actually killed. He was demented with age and when Lyra and Will found him being attacked by cliff ghasts, they killed the cliffghasts and released God from his glass case (or a crystal wagon, whichever image you prefer) and God dissolved in the wind.
I don’t understand why there should be so much fuss about this movie, with the religious calling for boycott and even banning the film. Okay, they’ve got the right to protest, but to even consider banning the film? That’s too much. That’s already trampling over the rights of other people who want to see the film. If they don’t want their kids seeing the movie or reading the books, then just instruct them not to watch it or read the books. Simple, isn’t? But then probably they don’t trust their own kids. After all, curiosity has been sometimes (or is it most of the time?) considered a “sin”. Haha.
I’ve been meaning to post something about the first book, the Golden Compass. Maybe I’d do so one of these days when I’m not so busy and, hopefully, before the movie gets shown.
Too bad, they decided to tone it down for the fright of lesser US patronage. Err, so this means the movie might go out a bit more ‘faithful’? :p
this is an act from religious bigots, who do not deserve to be called religious, its a diversified view of the perspectives of morality, i admire pullman, his works provide a different dimension. his attack is not mainly on the aspect of God in itself, but mans overt oppression and usage of this power, this being in the form of oppressive regimes, or even churches. catholics, real catholics strive in inter-religious dialouge, this includes contrasts to those faiths but share a common good in the morals and values of a working society.
somehow, i just dont like the fact that he hates C.S… Narnia was cool, read wise.

I’m not into fantasy flicks either, but this makes me kind of want to see The Golden Compass.
it always amuses me when some hard-assed Christians have panic-attacks when some “atheist” or “anti-Christian” movie or book comes up.
BUT this makes me more interested in reading the books and seeing the movie.
well, another of those hyper reactions. When will they learn that it always backfires? Or is this another publicity gimmick?
It’s just a movie. There’s nothing wrong with Atheism. Religion was created by man and so is this movie. At least this movie will provide entertainment to it’s viewers unlike religion thats provides falls hopes to it’s followers and is the main root of division in this world since the start of mens civilization.
well, i came from a Catholic school and was really devastated upon hearing this. i know for a fact that i myself am not ‘too religious’ but nonetheless this film CAN, in some way, influence children in a greater perspective. people may not know it but it does. it’s just basic psychology, really. it’s not that i do not respect atheist or those who practice it.. but they should also be aware of the greater population of Christians/Catholics all over the world.
if in a greater sense this movie DOES aim on “destroying” faith, it deserves the sort-of negative critic it’s getting… because people from both sides of it should give due respect to the other…
Now I HAVE to go see it.
