With barely a  month  to go before the 28th Worlds Universities Debate Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, one team just got a very generous prize of an all-expense paid trip to the tournament. Ateneo de Manila University’s Sharmila Paramanand and Charrisse Borromeo won the Square Off Debate Championship after besting Ateneo de Zamboanga’s Alzhoheir Hajim and Henry Segovia.

Ateneo de Manila reached the finals after beating Western Mindanao State University (octofinals), San Beda College (quarterfinals) and De Lasalle University (semifinals). The debaters from Loyola entered the tournament as the top seeds by virtue of having the best performance during the 2006 Philippine Inter-collegiate Debate Championship.

Ateneo de Zamboanga was seeded 11th coming in, but they worked up the ladder by winning rounds against the University of the Philippines Manila (octofinals), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (quarterfinals) and the University of the Philippines Diliman (semifinals).

Participants to the Worlds have already paid for the registration fee, so the prize would most likely be a reimbursement of the amount already spent. The top speakers of the tournament were also recognized in the Finals episode. The list included Ateneo de Manila’s Parmanand and Borromeo, Ateneo de Zamboanga’s Segovia, UP Manila’s Adrian Rabe and De Lasalle University’s Dino de Leon.

The World University Debate Championship starts December 28 and ends January 5.
