Despite being reviled and ridiculed by a lot of elitist quarters, Pinoyexchange continues to be the country’s biggest online forum with a member ship that runs hundreds of thousands. Aside from being an active virtual community, the site also prides in paving the way in connecting people off-line. There are plenty of special interest clubs that were founded via Pinoyexchange and four years ago, basketball diehards even managed to organize a basketball tourney. I played in that tournament but I had to beg off after a nasty spill all but subluxated by right ankle.

Well, the basketball crazies are at it again and it’s bound to be a great tournament. As you would expect, a lot of players are working guys in their mid 20s with a small number of students (there are only two on my team – one’s in law school and the other one’s in med school). The average height of participants is around 5’6″.

 

Five teams were formed after scrimmages and the drafting process was very tedious and nerve-racking to say the least. The commissioner (color_s_kaboink) picked out the five players who stood out during the scrimmages and they were named as the captains. Captains will be then responsible for picking out the players that will fill the roster of the team.

Pinoyexchange’s resident cassanova was drafted first overall by Vox Populi as the Red Team’s chief playmaker. Though admittedly umm.. heftier since the last time I saw him play, he still has the skills to lead a team like the Red Team – a lineup filled with guard-forwards who could shoot and run the break.

The Red Team (through captain Vox Populi) picked 11th (out of 36 players in attendance) and modesty aside, I was a bit surprised to have been drafted so early. I had decent plays during the scrimmage (mostly two-man pick and roll plays with my brother) but I don’t think I stood out that much. One reason for being drafted early could be the fact that I’m among the taller players in the pool – a factor that doesn’t really matter much because I play the perimeter.

My brother, who buried four treys during the scrimmage was also drafted in the third round. I felt he played much better and showed a lot of skill – good enough to drafted earlier but I guess that’s just the way it goes. He’s playing for the Black Team. Based on what I saw that afternoon, his team probably drafted the best team on paper. I initially wanted the Red Team to draft my brother as well but given the roster that my team already had, it seemed that he would most likely lose playing time. From how the Black Team drafted, it seems like they’re pinning their hopes on my brother to be their court general. Let’s see if I’m right.

Other registrants who failed to show up were drafted in absentia. Most of the absentee draftees were well-known PEX League monsters who were known to be dominant superstars during the first season. My team drafted mc_316 and blakedaddy among others.
