Pinoy Meets Worlds

Pardon the tacky title, I just couldn’t resist. All the debaters and adjudicators from the Philippines are now back in the country after taking Cebu Pacific 5J932 earlier this morning. The tabs from the tournament are now available and this is how the Filipinos fared in the 28th Worlds Universities Debate Championship hosted by Assumption University (Thailand).

Sharmila Parmanand and Charisse Boromeo (ATENEO A) barely missed the break rounds after falling just 9 speaker points shy of the breaking score. If you would remember, Sharmila and Charisse are the champions from ANC’s Square Off Debate Championship. Rounding out the top five are UP DILIMAN A (Claire Jiao and Melissa Sayoc), ATENEO B (Leloy Claudio and Miko Biscocho), UP MANILA A (Yves Aquino and Adrian Rabe) and DE LA SALLE A (Dino De Leon and Robin Sebolino).

My team received relatively high speaker points (as you would see later), but for some reason, we kept getting third in rounds. That affected our team score greatly and in the end, we couldn’t rank better than 240th in the competition.

ATENEO led the way as far as speaker points are concerned. Six speakers (Claudio, Parmanand, Boromeo, Biscocho, Kip Oebanda and Gica Mangahas) of the Ateneo Debate Society topped the Filipino tabs. Three speakers from UP MANILA also cracked the top ten - Rabe at 7th, Aquino at 8th and Benjamin Espina at 10th. Jiao of UP Diliman ended up at 9th spot.

My teammate Robert did very well.He finished comfortably at 14th (311th overall).
