The Preliminary Rounds: In Pictures
Aside from preparing by reading up on the latest developments in international affairs and current events, packing for the Worlds ranks as one of the most tedious steps to be done before the competition itself. The ten day-long tournament is packed with debate-related activities and almost nightly socials that would require a considerable amount of casual and formal clothes. Teammates usually come up with stuff to wear to make a greater lasting impression on adjudicators and to at least have a united front - pun intended.
In local tournaments, it’s quite notable that a lot of team employ this strategy. I have no data on whether it works or not, but one thing’s for sure - it’s fun to do. Haha.

December 27 : Icebreaker Party
From left:Â Don Stanley, Yves Saint James, Patricia Ann, Ligaya and Benjamin Noel
This was taken during our first night at Assumption University. The hosts threw an icebreaker party at the King’s Court.

December 28: Cultural Night
From Left: Ciacia, Benj, Aya, Japi and RobertÂ
The day was pretty much devoted to the adjudication exam for the would-be judges of the tournament. The delegates were encouraged to wear their national costume and fortunately, a lot of people were game - most of the Pinoys wore barong tagalog. I don’t recall seeing any Pinay in Filipiniana though.

December 29: Rounds 1, 2 & 3
Japi and DS
The contingent bought matching red Hang Ten shirts and Yves just printed the words TEAM MANILA on the shirts via silk screen. I used a small pin with the flag of the Philippines to obscure the Hang Ten logo.

December 30: Rounds 4, 5 & 6
Robert and Benj (UPM B)Â
Ok, can you guess the theme we had for this day? This has to be one of the most bone headed themes of all time. Robert and I went to Rockwell to get Team Manila shirts to wear for the Worlds. We weren’t thrilled about getting identical shirts so we ended up getting two shirts whose designs couldn’t be any more different.

Adrian and Yves (UPM A)
Now this a theme! A lot of thought and work definitely went into this. They bought matching shirts from Adidas and had their names prominently printed on the chest area. If that doesn’t create an impression, nothing will.

Ciacia and Aya (UPM C)
OK. What’s the theme. According to Aya, the theme is PRETTY. LOL
Now here are the equally botherawesome themes for the last day of competition.

And as a parting shot, I leave you wit this dramatic and overly campy shot before the championship dinner…
