PIDC 2008: Ateneo de Manila C Locks Up Their 2nd Straight Philippine Intercollegiate Debate Championship

After five thrilling days of competition, Ateneo de Manila C clinched the Philippine Intercollegiate Championship after beating the top seed Ateneo de Manila A via a 5-2 split in the finals. It could considered as a minor upset because Ateneo C had to beat Ateneo B in the semifinals as well. Ateneo A reached the finals after a 3-2 split decision against the fifth-breaking UP Diliman A.

Ateneo C is comprised of Kip Oebanda (adjudged as the best speaker of the finals), Shiveena Parmanand (yes, Sharmila’s sister) and Pauline Gairanod (also a finalist from the National Debate Championship last October).

Ateneo A consisted of the trio of Miko Biscocho and Gica Mangahas (NDC Champions) and Stephanie Co (Gairanod’s teammate last NDC).

UP Diliman and Ateneo de Manila shared the top speaker honors after having a virtual monopoly of the slots. Ateneo had seven speakers in the top ten - Oebanda, Biscocho, Mangahas, Co and semifinalists Vinny Tagle, Ely Zosa and Danni de Castro. UP Diliman wound up with representatives in the top 10 with Claire Jiao (the top speaker), Tet Grajo and Jowee Atienza.
