Would You Like A Secular Philippines?

Despite  the lion’s share that Roman Catholicism has in the population of the country, I would still like to think that there are lot of people who see the value of having a secular government and society wherein policies and laws are debated and passed based on their merits rather than the blessing of some overbearing institution. I have a lot of friends who are men and women of faith but still find the arrogant and often brash posturing of church leaders in issues like reproductive health and education to be deplorable and downright tasteless.

Religion is an important thing to a lot of people and as long as the practice of such is done to nobody’s detriment, then individuals should learn to respect individual differences and live with the consequences of being a part of a highly diversified world. Unfortunately, like in any other scenario wherein one group holds a seemingly overwhelming virtual majority, that group can be quite deliberate in exercising their right to influence how things are run. It is one thing to lobby for what your religion supposedly holds as its basic tenets but going to the extreme end of blackmailing those who support something that goes against the teachings of one’s church just sets us back into a time when the merits of the case were a mere background to the personalities, prevailing dogma and ruling hegemony of that time. Up Dharma Down Mall Tour! Robinson’s Place Manila

I was really shocked – not to mention ecstatic — that Up Dharma Down came to my home mall to play. They’re not exactly the first band that I think of when I hear the words “mall tour” but what the hell, there’s no need to complain if you can watch your favorite band at a venue so close to where you live. I was there about one hour early but I was beaten by around half a dozen people for the early bird award. The new album BIPOLAR was played while we were waiting. Continue Reading »

AXN-Asia’s Big Challenge and Atheista Plus Two Friends (SM Mall of Asia, 7 February 2008)

Jump shot again!

Here we go!  I just sent my application to AXN-Asia’s Big Challenge and now, all I can do is to cross my fingers that my team will be one of the twenty-four (24) teams who will be competing for the top prize two weeks from now. We were required to submit a group picture so we whipped one out real fast during the last time we met. All three of us are members of the Couchsurfing project so it’s understood that we all like to travel.

Here are the members of the team – I will informally dub our trio as The Couchsurfers!

The guy on the left knows what’s best for your money… and claims to be real good with visual puzzles (he is after all an amazing multimedia artist).

The guy in the middle is a jet-setting blogger… who obviously can’t really jump that high. He may also be the shortest but he’s probably the strongest.

The last guy is another blogger who loves to do jumpshots. Printed on his shirt is NO RELIGION. He will screw up his team’s chances if there’s a bike leg involved in the race. Haha

Wish us luck!  :)
