Nine Inch Nails Wave Goodbye: Probably The Best Concert I’ve Seen In My Entire Life

The very moment that I heard about the rumor that Nine Inch Nails was going to Manila, I started a thread at Pinoyexchange to share the news to the rest of the people who may be interested in watching Trent Reznor and company. It was really surreal to think that Nine Inch Nails would even bother to go to our shores for their Wave Goodbye Tour. Let’s face it, the Philippines isn’t exactly a stop for most rock acts since most of them already know that we’re a country who fall head over heels for pop tarts and cheese tards.

The stage looked like the most loaded performance backdrop that I’ve ever seen. There were literally dozens of lights at the top of the sage and the strobes at the back were blinding enough to make any epileptic go into grand mal seizure mode. To top it all off, green and blue L.E.D.s were also interspersed in the stage’s rig to complete the full effect of the Nine Inch Nails experience.

Listening to Nine Inch Nails is literally an assault to the senses. While the songs can be aurally heavy, the textures in the music are rich and varied enough to be appreciated as individual components as much as they are strong as a sum of many parts. The music clearly is a product of many hours of tweaking synth beats, bass lines, guitar riffs and drum beats. The music is heavy but not mindlessly loud and due to the very strong electronica component, the songs could be very pleasing even to the uninitiated.

To the fans who have been familiar with Nine Inch Nail’s songs for years, the concert was a great trip through the more-than-a-decade reign of Trent Reznor as one of music’s most eclectic and cutting edge personalities.

If you’ve seen any of Trent Reznor’s video, you very well know that Nine Inch Nail’s music is not just about what you hear – but the visuals that go with the sounds maybe it be on a music video or a live performance.

While NIN chose to not play their biggest hit (at least in this country) Perfect Drug, fans who braved the rains on August 5 were treated to a show with 25 songs on the set list! More importantly, the once-and-still controversial cult hit Closer was also played for the first time during the Wave Goodbye Tour. While the show lasted way longer than an average concert would, it felt like a blur. The band never took a break longer than twenty seconds in between songs and this was despite the fact that the members were changing istruments all through out the set. Trent was likewise throwing stuff around like it was nobody’s business! It was amazing that nobody got hurt – and none of the synth machines got hit by a stray microphone stand or guitar!

Let me take this opportunity to thank the brave and dedicated people of Splintr who made this happen! Congratulations, guys! We owe you big time! Thank you for bringing Nine Inch Nails to Manila!
