Help Typhoon Ondoy Victims Through Philippine Aid

We’ve all seen the images of devastation on our TV screens and in photos posted online. We all know people who have lost the things they have worked for their entire lives.

Let’s give what we can to Philippine Aid. This is an initiative by a few bloggers to raise funds for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. All proceeds will be donated to the Philippine National Red Cross. The Red Cross currently doesn’t accept Paypal donations, but Philippine Aid can surely handle that.

Feel free to repost this badge. Please spread the word via your Social Networking Sites (Facebook, Multiply, Twitter, Plurk etc.), SMS and e-mail. Thanks.

There are storms brewing to the east of the country. We have to be more vigilant.

Leptospirosis Prophylaxis: Doxycycline

If you have waded through the flood waters, please consider taking two tablets of doxycycline. It is an antibiotic that is supposedly not to be sold over the counter, but since we’re in the Philippines, you could probably get them even without a prescription.

If you’ve been exposed to flood water, take 2 100mg tabs of doxycycline and your chances of getting leptospirosis should somewhat diminish. This drug is relatively safe and very cheap. This is not to be taken by pregnant women or very young children though.

If you want to help, please read Manolo Quezon’s post.

Stay safe guys.

Sandata: The Light EP

I first encountered the band Sandata through the social networking site Couchsurfing where their frontman Aldrich Policarpio was also a member. Their music was right up my alley – it was reminiscent of the old school hard rock that was prevalent during the early to mid 90s. The songs had an anthemic quality that hints at potential commercial viability while still maintaining a very unapologetic rock edge.

A week ago, Aldrich posted a notice on the site bulletin board inviting everyone to Sandata’s EP launch at Mag:net Bonifacio High Street last Saturday (September 12, 2009). It sure seemed like a very well anticipated event – there were more than 200 people on Facebook who said that they were going!

I got a copy of The Light EP at the entrance and here are my thoughts regarding the album. Continue Reading »

UP Manila Wins The 1st Luzon Intervarsity Debate Championship

After making it to the finals of the Philippine Intercollegiate Debate Championship (PIDC) for the first time, UP Manila Debate Circle clearly had good reason to look forward to the upcoming year. Seemingly still hot from their glorious run back in April, the trio of Robert Totanes, Lee Yarcia and Carol Tan all made it to the finals of the UP Intervarsity Debate Championship.

Carol Stephanie Tan and Lee Edson Yarcia of UP Manila Team A bagged the champion’s trophy after besting 52 other teams at the 1st Luzon Intervarsity Debate Championship hosted by UP Los Banos. The duo from the UP College of Medicine reached the finals of the tournament after finishing as the third best team during the preliminary rounds with a score of 12 points out of a highest possible total of 15. Yarcia was also named as the Final round’s best speaker.

The pairing of Robert Angelo Totanes and Ligaya Bautista (UP Manila Team B) were also able to make the finals. UP Manila B actually finished ahead of UP Manila Team A during the preliminaries – they had 13 points, good enough for second place behind UP Indie A (Jowee Atienza and Raymond Vittorio).

Just like in the PIDC; Totanes, Tan and Yarcia all managed to get into the Top Ten Speakers list with Tan at 3rd, Yarcia art 4th and Totanes at 6th.

Marlboro Country, Sagada – The Best Views In Sagada

I first heard about Marlboro Country, Sagada while watching one of Howie Severino‘s documentaries on I-Witness. I have already been to Mountain Province four times when the episode aired so I was very surprised that no one has ever told me about the wild horses.

The story ends somewhat sad for these once proud steeds. There are only three of them left galloping along the meadows and hills of Lamangan – a barangay in Western Sagada. Most of the time, hikers won’t be able to see them. Their droppings would be everywhere though; it might puzzle most why so much dung is in the area considering there are only three horses around.
