Freethinker Music Weekly on Filipino Freethinkers

If you’ve been to this blog before, you would probably know by now that I;m really into music. Over the past decade I’ve tried to diversify my musical knowledge by listening to different kinds of music from all over the world and as much as possible, from different genres. While my last.fm account sure gives away what I like to listen to the most, I do try to keep an open mind when it comes to music. I’m now into a lot of kinds of tunes – from rock to metal to even dance and even a bit of *gasp* jazz.

I started writing a new *hopefully* recurring feature post on Filipino Freethinkers called Freethinker Music Weekly – a column wherein I’ll share bands who have written songs relevant to the freethinker experience (just in case somebody cares). The featured genre for the first installment is metal and hard rock.

If you’re interested to see what I came up, please head on to the site by clicking the link. Feel free to add me on last.fm if you have an account. It’s also great to learn new stuff from the musical quirks of other people.

Salmiakki Koskenkorva – the Finnish drink with ammonium chloride

Finland is probably one of the best countries in the world. Aside from having a big non-religious sector of the population (currently at around 20%), Finland is also home to the most interesting music artists I’ve heard. I do try to scour through the metal madness that Europe has to offer so I’m very familiar with some Finnish bands. Try looking for videos of Apocalyptica, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica and Lordi and you’ll see how rich their metal culture is.

Over a regular Couchsurfing gathering, I met a Finnish guy who was working on finishing his post-graduate studies here in the Philippines.  What was interesting was that we listened to the same bands – Tool, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Disturbed, Incubus, Lordi and even Korn.

Me: Hey dude, have you heard of Disasterpiece by Slipknot? The song that goes like “I want to slit your throat…”

Finn: *interrupts* “and fuck the wound!”

The unholy alliance between UNAIDS and the Roman Catholic Church on HIV and AIDS

An article on Filipino Freethinkers captured why an alliance between UNAIDS and the Roman Catholic Church on the issue of HIV and AIDS awareness and prevention can be quite a head scratcher. The piece by Filipino Freethinkers President Red Tani sure shows the fundamental contradictions between the stances of the two groups. While UNAIDS supports the idea of the giving out of condoms to decrease the likelihood of virus transmission, the church (and the Pope for that matter) have been preaching the idea that giving away condoms to people will only make them more likely to be promiscuous – hence leading to more cases of infection.

Elizabeth Angsioco – Female Network Awards finalist for Advocacy

Elizabeth Angsioco is one of the finalists for the Female Network Awards for Advocacy. Having met Elizabeth during various events in support of the passing of the Reproductive Health Bill and the Carlos Celdran saga, I can safely say that she is as deserving as any candidate could ever be for an award like this. She is a long-time defender of the rights of women and is also the brains behind various projects that uplift the lives of women who have been victims of crimes. Elizabeth has also established several livelihood and micro-credit programs that has assisted over a thousand people in urban poor communities in Manila. She doesn’t only talks the talk, she definitely walks the walk as well – and with grace and great poise at that! :) Continue Reading »

The fallacy of the death penalty

In the year 2006, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo officially commuted over 1200 sentences of capital punishment to life imprisonment possibly due to the overwhelming pressure coming from international groups and more importantly, the church. China executes well over 3000 people a year but the Philippines did take its sweet time in putting those of convicted of heinous crimes to justice. With over a thousand waiting in death row, it sure seemed like the government and the penal system dragged their heels in putting them to the lethal injection chamber. The numbers are not readily available but I reckon there weren’t really a lot of executions from 1993 to 2006. I will be surprised if the number would even top 100. Continue Reading »
