Ervim Charles Orbase (Asia Pacific College) is the Philippines’ ESU Public Speaking Competition Representative To London

IMG_1088

Ervim Charles Orbase from the Asia Pacific College was hailed the winner of the English Speaking Union- Philippines Public Speaking Competition held last Saturday (March 6, 2010) at the University of the Philippines School of Economics. He will be the Philippines’ representative to the international competition that would be held in London in a few months’ time. The theme for this year’s competition is “speculations on the future”.

I was able to judge him during the semifinals and he’s an absolute performer. He can literally work a room with his amazing charisma and great personality. He talked about how he once got into trouble for being a shoplifter in a neighborhood grocery store. Orbase likened his predicament of wanting to escape to the struggles that each Filipino goes through when one thinks of leaving the country for greener pastures. There may have been rough edges in his speech but the guy is just so damn funny and personable to lose. He’s definitely different from our previous winners.

Patricia Evangelista – of Storyline and Philippine Daily Inquirer fame — won the very same competition in 2004 when she talked about how Filipinos have found their way to all the corners of the globe. It was a very impassioned speech about her understanding of what it means to be Filipino.

Gian Karlo Dapul (who I also had the privilege of judging in the preliminaries) won the 2008 edition of the tournament talked about fish mucus and foot fungus. While he may look stiff as a board (peace, Gian!), Gian was actually quite a funny guy. Come to think of it, he was a milder version of Orbase. They did the same things – share anecdotes, spoke in different accents and voices etc. The only thing that he didn’t do was shout at the top of his lungs like Orbase did. So I guess they have lots of similarities and yet glaring differences as well. Dapul is now sophomore at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Second placer Asia Pacific College’s Czarina Moresco also used her own life as the major talking point of her speech. She mainly shared stories about her struggles as an expatriate Filipino during the time of the time of the recent global recession. She was awesome! It was cool to know that she’s also a soon-to-be published author AND fashion designer (with actual shows!) on top of being a student.

Asia Pacific College is a relatively new player in this field so it was such a pleasant surprise to see them do so well in the competition. Most of the participants in the ESU competition are usually seasoned debaters from the institutions active in the debate circuit. APC is more or less an outsider to this circle so it is quite unexpected for them to just take the competition by storm.

UP Diliman’s Richard Estrella took home the third spot after he talked about in length about his nose.

The preliminaries were held in the morning with seasoned (!) debaters such as myself, BJ Guerrero, Anna Arcellana, Alistair Zosa, Jon Jon Avila, Aaron Chan and Yang Villa judged speakers. Due to the many UP Diliman speakers who made the semifinals, I was the only one left to judge the semis with four members of the UP Diliman faculty.

Aaron Chan and Anna Arcellana (UP DILIMAN A) Named As New National Debate Champions

Lyceum of the Philippines, Manila — After finishing second in the preliminaries, University of the Philippines Diliman Team A comprised of Anna Arcellana and Aaron Chan claimed the top plum at the National Debate Championship. They bested three other teams namely Ateneo de Manila University Team B Vincenzo Tagle and Ces Gotamco, Ateneo de Manila Team C Danielle de Castro and Jasmine Cruz and University of the Philippines Diliman Team C Alistair Zosa and Candice Chung.

Arcellana who spoke as the opposition whip was the best speaker for the Finals. UP Diliman A was the last of the top-seeded teams remaining in the competition. The three other teams in the top four – Ateneo A, UP Manila A and Ateneo F (1st, 3rd and 4th) — all got eliminated during the highly contentious quarterfinal rounds. Ateneo C finished 5th, Ateneo B was 7th while UP Diliman C was 8th. This is UP Diliman’s second National Debate Championship win. The duo of Nico Cabrera and Claudia Poon was the first team from Diliman to ever win the prestigious title.

Arcellana and Chan also reached the finals back in 2007 (Philippine Military Academy as hosts) but lost to eventual champions Ateneo (then with Mico Biscocho and Gica Mangahas). The University of the Cordilleras in Baguio City won the right to host the 12th National Debate Championship next year.

De Lasalle Worlds On 2012

The World Universities Debate Championship (or the Worlds, for short) is collegiate debate’s largest competition. It attracts over two hundred educational institutions from all over the world to face off over nine preliminary rounds of debate set to British Parliamentary format. The Philippines last hosted this event back in 1999 when Ateneo de Manila won the rights to carry out and organize the tournament.

Another Philippine university will be bidding for the 2012 Worlds and I’m wishing them all the best. De Lasalle University will take its case to the council members during the 2010 Worlds at Koc, Turkey to see if they can bring back the tournament back to the Philippines. They need all the help they can get so I’m officially throwing in my support for the Lasalle ‘sbid forĀ  32nd Worlds for what it’s worth.

Note: The Worlds take place from the last few days of December to the first week of January. Going to the Worlds is a great ‘sacrifice’ since you will be surely celebrating the New Year without your family around. The 2011 Worlds will be hosted by Botswana.

Past hosts:

2009 -University of Cork (Ireland)

2008 – Assumption University (Thailand)

2007 – University of British Columbia (Canada)

UP Manila Wins The 1st Luzon Intervarsity Debate Championship

After making it to the finals of the Philippine Intercollegiate Debate Championship (PIDC) for the first time, UP Manila Debate Circle clearly had good reason to look forward to the upcoming year. Seemingly still hot from their glorious run back in April, the trio of Robert Totanes, Lee Yarcia and Carol Tan all made it to the finals of the UP Intervarsity Debate Championship.

Carol Stephanie Tan and Lee Edson Yarcia of UP Manila Team A bagged the champion’s trophy after besting 52 other teams at the 1st Luzon Intervarsity Debate Championship hosted by UP Los Banos. The duo from the UP College of Medicine reached the finals of the tournament after finishing as the third best team during the preliminary rounds with a score of 12 points out of a highest possible total of 15. Yarcia was also named as the Final round’s best speaker.

The pairing of Robert Angelo Totanes and Ligaya Bautista (UP Manila Team B) were also able to make the finals. UP Manila B actually finished ahead of UP Manila Team A during the preliminaries – they had 13 points, good enough for second place behind UP Indie A (Jowee Atienza and Raymond Vittorio).

Just like in the PIDC; Totanes, Tan and Yarcia all managed to get into the Top Ten Speakers list with Tan at 3rd, Yarcia art 4th and Totanes at 6th.
